No matter how well-organized and disciplined
you are, you always found ways to spend your hours on unnecessary things like
scrolling social media feed, shopping online, watching TV. This is one of the
many examples of procrastination.
Procrastination is the act of
avoiding a task that should be done within a certain deadline. We all
procrastinate but most of us really don’t consider the reasons why we do it.

Is procrastination is same as
laziness?
No,
procrastination and laziness both are different but people may take them as
same things.
Procrastination
is an active process because you are refusing to do one thing but going to do
another thing with more energy and with more hurry.
Procrastination usually
involves not doing certain unpleasant thing which is likely more important one,
in favour of one that is much easier and enjoyable to you.
Laziness
is an inactive process because it is unwillingness to act or not doing
anything. But if we procrastinate over a longer span of time, we can become de-motivated
and disillusioned with our work.
Why do we procrastinate and wait
until the last minute?
An
estimate says that 25-75% of college students procrastinate on academic work.
The problem of procrastination is mainly seen in students. A survey in 1997 found
that procrastination was one of the main reasons behind why PhD. candidates
failed to complete their dissertations.

Fav Word of Procrastinators |
Students
procrastinate because they are afraid to fail or they think that their work
can’t meet the expectations of their teacher and maybe their work can’t be made
with excessive perfectionism.
How to recognize that you are
procrastinating or not?
*Wait
for the right time with right mood to perform a particular task.
*Filling
up your days with easier tasks.
*Start
a high priority task and then go off to make a cup of coffee.
*Reading
your emails again and again without making a decision what to do with them.
*Leave
an item in your To-do list for a long lime, even though it is important one.

7 ways to overcome procrastination:
*Ask someone
to check up on you: Peer pressure really works. Connect with someone at certain
time intervals and commit to what you will do before your next meeting or you
can set particular date in your calendar.
*Drop the perfectionism: People with perfectionist
attitude tend to wait until things are perfect in order to proceed. So if it is
not perfect you cannot be finished.
*Focus on your “WHY”: Procrastinators
focus on short term gains as opposed to long term results. Start asking
yourself that why are you doing that task and what are the benefits to that
particular task.
*Be realistic: Establish your schedule,
set yourself up for the success. Assignments often take much longer time then
expected so bake in some extra time.
For
example if you usually get up from bed at 12, don’t think to expand your
routine to directly 3 in the morning in one day. You will become sick. Expand
your schedule slightly not drastically.
*Act as you go: Tackle task as soon as
they rise so you will never feel burden on yourself.
*Commit to the task: Focus on doing not
avoiding. Write down the tasks in one diary and tick mark when they complete. Specify
a time during which they should be completed.
*Promise yourself a reward: If you
complete a difficult task then give yourself a reward. Can be a slice of cake
or a cup of coffee from your favourite cafe. Make sure how good it feels to
finish things.
So if you really want to come out of that circle of procrastinators, then you should definitely go for these solutions.
